What does Board membership with Buddies Not Bullies entail?

Non-Profit Board service consideration usually generates a lot of questions for both the seasoned board member & someone just getting started.  No worries - most people have questions.  If you’re new to the whole Non-Profit Board service arena, it’s perfectly normal to feel uncertain, a little anxious, & excited all at once. 

There are two areas we at Buddies Not Bullies get a lot of questions about.   Specifically, what is the organizational structure & what are the responsibilities involved?  Let’s take a closer look.

  • Governance Committee - Generally speaking, this committee’s roles include board recruitment & on-boarding, ensuring that board members are equipped with adequate tools via orientation, development & mentoring opportunities. The Governance committee also ensures organizational compliance with governing documents, legal statutes, funder requirements, & ethical best practices.

    Internal Affairs Committee - This committee’s functions involve budgeting & finance, financial audit processes, personnel policies, & program evaluation.

    External Affairs Committee - External Affairs committee members naturally communicate and engage with the community in a variety of ways. This committee spearheads agency fundraising efforts & special events. They take special interest in broader policy and advocacy efforts impacting our beneficiaries & our programs. Finally, these members typically are the ‘forward face of the agency’ - participating in various formats & platforms typical of Community Relations genius’s.

  • Mission - To help keep Buddies Not Bullies focused on our mission. Always considering the questions “What is our mission?” and “Does this action serve the beneficiaries of Buddies Not Bullies?” during decision making & actions.

    Meeting Attendance - Take attendance seriously. No one can make all board meetings, but the expectation is to make most of them.

    Committee Work - Entails serving on a board committee that oversees a certain aspect of operations.

    Finance - Ensure that financial accountability & stewardship are hallmarks of our operations. Additionally, Board members participate in some form of fundraising such as special events, giving days, expanding & strengthening connections to existing & potential donors, & donation campaigns.

    Financial Support - Board members support Buddies Not Bullies financially in proportion to their capacity to give.

    Advocates in the Community - As a member of the board it’s essential to serve as an ambassador and advocate for Buddies Not Bullies in the community and among peers.
